About Us

The Kingston Phoenix Road Club is a Club that welcomes riders of all abilities and cycling backgrounds, and promotes and celebrates participation in all cycling activities. The Club has its origins in cycle racing and encourages all Members to consider taking part in friendly, competitive racing.

Based in the Kingston/Epsom/Sutton area of South London and Surrey, but with members who live in Epsom, Ewell, Worcester Park, Sutton, Surbiton, New Malden, Cheam, Chessington, and Kingston. Our Saturday and Sunday rides usually start at Horton Country Park in Epsom.

We were formed in 1936 to allow members of the local cycle touring section of the CTT to race with their friends rather than leave to join one of the many existing cycle racing clubs. Our main cycling sport is Time Trialling and we have a long and proud history in this sport.

In recent years we have organised time trial events every fortnight during the summer months, the annual BBQ and our very well supported Open 10 time trial; we have enjoyed Easter weekend rides (in 2022 to Salisbury, 2023 to Bournemouth) by road and trail rider groups; early May trip to Majorca; a coast-to-coast event on the longest day; a trip to ride in the Calshot velodrome; being part of, or spectating in, one of the Club Points battles; chasing (and smashing) Club Records and/or personal bests; exotic overseas adventures to take on some mountains (Ventoux, the Alps and mountains around Cardiff all included); our monthly club night at The Rifleman pub in Epsom; this year’s Hilly 12 mile time trial (or the breakfast afterwards) or a weekend for the trail riders, to Hindhead in 2023.

At the start of 2018 we had 84 members and at the end of October 2022 we have grown to 125 members. New members are always welcome to try us out before joining us. Just turn up on your road or mountain bike and join our Saturday morning rides, starting at 10am from the car park in Horton Country park. Here's the map

Off Road Trail rides

Away from the competitive side of the sport we have a growing number of off-road trail riders who have a fantastic knowledge of tracks and trails through many of our local woods and commons. We ride on Saturday, Wednesday and Thursday.

We organise stay away weekend rides. In 2023 we will enjoy a weekend of trail in the Forest of Dean, ride from Epsom to Hindhead and back. In previous years we have ridden end to end on the South Downs Way and spent a weekend on the Taff Trail in South Wales.

There's more about our trail rides here.

Time trials
Time Trials

We punch above our weight in the London South District and have recently been frequent winners of the Rawson Shield; a trophy awarded to the club with the highest number of riders participating in a time trial season. We have riders of all abilities taking part in time trialling, riding either road or time trial bikes . We have our own calendar of club events, which comprise mainly of fortnightly 10 mile time trials, a low cost and easy way of starting the sport, but we also organise 10 mile and hill climb events. While time trialling is at the core of what we do as a club, many of our members also take part in other cycling events. In recent years, our members have taken part in Ride London, The Etape de Tour, The Tour of Flanders, The Dragon Ride, audax, crit racing and triathlons.

Road rides

We are a sociable bunch and organise Saturday rides that meet at Horton Country Park, Epsom, for a morning ride - this generally splits into three groups: fast, slow and off-road. There is also a Sunday ride that aims to do around 50 miles and be home by late lunchtime.

Ride details can be found here.

History

The club was formed in 1936 when several members of the Kingston branch of the Cyclist Touring Club wanted to race, something that was against CTC rules. A new club was created retaining the Kingston name and the Phoenix was added as it rose from the ashes of the CTC club.

Over the decades the club has held club nights at locations in Kingston and Worcester Park, but due to our modern busy lives we now meet on the second Thursday of the month at The Rifleman pub in East Street in Epsom. Of course many of our members also meet on our many rides and keep in touch via our Whatsapp groups of which we currently have for our Saturday and Sunday rides. You can also find more details about our recent rides on our Facebook page and tweats on Twitter.
