On Sunday 15th April the Southern Counties Cycling Union 25 Mile TT was held on a morning that was brisk, misty and still. The usual SCCU course was unavailable, so G25/47 (of Medium Gear fame) was used. The hillier nature of the course along with recent downpours accounted for a field that was much smaller than the organisers expected.
Having rode the Medium Gear on the same course earlier in the season – the six Kingston Phoenix riders were on good spirits and closest Rawson Shield rivals, Crawley Wheelers, had four riders on the start line – allowing the Phoenix to consolidate gains in that particular competition.
The good conditions saw Pat Wright (PaceLine RT) come home at 51:49, followed by Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC) at 52:14 who also took the veterans category. Back at the HQ – even some time after the results were in – there was still a debate as to whether Wright’s time was a course record or not. This could still not be confirmed at time of writing.
Jacintha Hamilton-Love (Dulwich Paragon CC) showed that she wasn’t impeded by the amount of syllables in her name to win the women's category at 01:03:53. The team prize went to South Downs Bikes who finished with a combined time of 02:46:40.
Dale Lush was the first Phoenix rider back in the shed with 59:47 whilst Simon T, possibly suffering from some post-holiday dehydration issues came in 1:05:23. Gavin, David, Suzanne and Mike ensured a strong performance across the remaining categories, demonstrating that the winter training regimes have been paying off but there is still a long way to go.
